Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
What is the SDF?
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily fee that international tourists
pay to visit Bhutan. As of 2024, the fee is $100 USD per night
for most international visitors.
Who Pays the SDF?
All international tourists pay the SDF, with some exceptions:
- Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals pay Nu. 1200 per day
- Children under 6 years are exempt
- Children aged 6-12 receive a 50% discount
- Students under 25 with valid student ID receive a 25% discount
Where Does the Money Go?
The SDF directly funds Bhutan's unique development philosophy and social programs:
Free Education
Funding schools and educational programs for all Bhutanese citizens
from primary to higher education.
Free Healthcare
Supporting Bhutan's universal healthcare system,
providing medical care to all citizens.
Environmental Conservation
Maintaining Bhutan's 70%+ forest coverage
and carbon-negative status.
Cultural Preservation
Protecting and restoring dzongs,
monasteries, and traditional arts.
High Value, Low Impact
Bhutan's tourism policy prioritizes quality over quantity.
By maintaining the SDF, Bhutan ensures that tourism remains sustainable,
destinations stay uncrowded, and visitors enjoy authentic,
meaningful experiences.
Your contribution directly supports the preservation
of what makes Bhutan unique.
Payment Information
The SDF is collected by your tour operator and must be paid before
