Soi Yaktsha Trek
12 Nights / 13 Days
A 13-day Bhutan adventure combining cultural exploration in Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro with the iconic Jomolhari trekking route — high mountain passes, pristine alpine valleys, yak-herding settlements, diverse wildlife, and unforgettable Himalayan scenery, concluding with the legendary Tiger's Nest hike.
Overview
This renowned trek — often called the Jomolhari Loop or Soi Yaktsa variant — starts from the historic Drukgyel Dzong near Paro, covering approximately 50–60 km through lush rhododendron forests, winding river valleys, and expansive alpine meadows that burst with wildflowers in season. It reaches a maximum elevation of 4,890 m at the breathtaking Bhonte La Pass, where panoramic views unfold across snow-capped peaks and glacial horizons.
Highlights include uninterrupted vistas of the sacred Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 m) — Bhutan's highest unclimbed peak, revered as the abode of goddesses — and the dramatic Jichu Drake from Jangothang base camp at 4,050 m, offering a perfect setting for stargazing amid grazing yaks. Wildlife sightings of elusive blue sheep scaling rocky slopes, sturdy yaks roaming high pastures, and vibrant ruddy shelducks gliding over the pristine Tsho Phu lakes are among the route's many rewards.
Nested entirely within Jigme Dorji National Park — Bhutan's largest protected area at over 4,500 sq km — the trek showcases towering mountains, deep emerald valleys carved by ancient glaciers, and crystal-clear streams threading through enchanted landscapes. Best undertaken April–June or September–November to enjoy crisp weather and avoid the monsoon. The adventure concludes with the legendary Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) hike above Paro valley.
