Gangtey Valley Walking Tour
A 9-day Bhutan journey through ancient monasteries, sacred valleys, and the breathtaking Gangtey (Phobjikha) glacial valley — rich in black-necked crane sightings, cultural treasures, and gentle walking trails amid pristine Himalayan scenery.
Overview
Gangtey Valley, also known as Phobjikha Valley, is a stunning glacial valley in
central Bhutan at around 2,900 metres elevation within the Black Mountains
National Park. Its wide, flat expanse stands out after dense forest climbs,
offering vast open spaces rare in Bhutan's typically enclosed valleys, with a
central stream winding through grasslands and dwarf bamboo thickets.
The valley is home to the 17th-century Nyingma Gangtey Monastery and pristine
meadows celebrated for their ecological purity. Scenic hikes like the Gangtey
Nature Trail, the annual Crane Festival (every November 11th), sustainable
homestays, biodiversity, and eco-tourism define its character.
Peripheral farmlands grow potatoes and turnips on gentle slopes, surrounded by
coniferous forests of blue pine, birch, maple, and rhododendrons. Vast wetlands
dominate the core, grazed by cattle and horses in summer to prepare for the
black-necked cranes that winter here from November to March.
As a highland wetland, it supports pristine meadows in a U-shaped glacial form
on the Black Mountains' western slopes over 5,000 metres high. The legendary
Black and White Waters streams — raced by a snake and boar in local mythology —
add mythic charm, explaining why rice won't grow here. This conservation area
emphasises eco-tourism amid unspoiled serenity.
