Overview

The Druk Path Trek stands out as one of Bhutan's premier short treks, weaving a scenic 54 km route between the lush Paro Valley and the capital city of Thimphu. Spanning 4–5 days of trekking, it follows ancient herder trails and high mountain passes, immersing trekkers in Bhutan's dramatic Himalayan landscapes. Daily hikes of 7–12 km last 4–6 hours, with elevation gains that challenge without overwhelming fit adventurers. Starting at around 2,400 m in Paro, the path offers jaw-dropping vistas of snow-capped peaks including sacred Mt. Jomolhari (7,314 m) — often called Bhutan's guardian deity.

The trek is a feast for the senses: rhododendron forests burst with pink and red blooms in spring, crystal-clear alpine lakes such as Jimilang Tsho shimmer along the route, and yak pastures dotted with prayer flags stretch across open ridges. The Phajoding Monastery complex with its cliffside shrines is a highlight, as are wildlife sightings of Himalayan marmots, blue sheep, and the vibrant Himalayan monal. Starry nights at high campsites feel truly otherworldly.

Rated moderate, the route is ideal for hikers with good fitness and basic acclimatization. Passes like Labna La (4,235 m) and the Jimilang Tsho campsite (3,880 m) provide stunning resting points. Porters or pack animals carry gear; permits are mandatory and typically bundled with a licensed guide. Best seasons are March–May for wildflower carpets and mild temperatures, or September–November for crisp skies and autumn colours.
