Visiting central Bhutan is a journey into the cultural and historical heart of the country. As travelers move east from western Bhutan, the scenery becomes more dramatic and untouched — winding mountain roads, deep valleys, ancient forests, and peaceful rural villages dot the landscape at every turn.
One of the highlights along the way is crossing Dochula Pass, celebrated for its panoramic Himalayan views and 108 memorial chortens. Further along, the road passes through Wangdue Phodrang before climbing over Pele La — the pass that marks the transition into central Bhutan's more remote and traditionally rich landscape.
The journey's main destination is Trongsa, home to the magnificent Trongsa Dzong — one of Bhutan's largest and most historically important fortresses. Strategically positioned above a deep valley, the dzong played a pivotal role in controlling trade routes and political power for centuries. Bhutan's kings have traditionally served as governors of Trongsa before ascending to the throne, giving this town a profound royal significance. Above the dzong stands Ta Dzong, now a museum showcasing the full sweep of Bhutan's royal history.
