Jambay Lhakhang Festival

Jambay Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in the kingdom. It was founded by, Songtsen Gampo, a Tibetan King in the 7th century AD. As a legend said, on the same night 108 temples were built by the Tibetan King to subdue the evil demon. A second is located in Paro, the Kichu Lhakhang also built on the same day.

Day 1
Arrival at Paro

Welcome to the Land Of Thunder Dragon! You will be welcomed by one of our guides waiting outside the arrival hall.

National Memorial Chorten – built in 1974 to memorialize Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third ruler of Bhutan (1928-1972).

Buddha Point in the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park to see the 169-foot-tall bronze statue of the situated Buddha Dordenma.

Heritage Museum – Dedicated to connecting people to the Bhutanese rural past though exhibition of artefacts used in rural households.

Day 2
Thimphu

The morning will hike to Phajoding Monastery, one of the 5 endangered cultural monuments that need the most help in the world as listed in the World Monument Fund (WMF). Phajoding monastery was founded in 1224 by Phajo Drugom Zhipo (Buddhist saint) who spread the Drukpa Kagyupa sect of Buddhism in Bhutan.

Textile Museum – witnesses the art of traditional weaving.

Paper making factory – witnesses the art of paper making.

Day 3
Thimphu to Punakha

We will drive to the formal capital of Bhutan until 1955, Punakha. On the way, we will stop at Dochula Pass, a popular tourist spot that grants stunning 360-degree views of the Himalayas. Here, we have 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens build in the name of the Bhutanese soldiers killed in a 2003 battle with Assamese insurgents from India.

Also, visit Druk Wangyel Lhakhang build to commemorate 100 years of monarchy.

Punakha Dzong – Build at the junction of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu river by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1637 to serve as the center of religious and administrative decision making.

Pho Chhu Suspension Bridge – The longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, 160 meters long gives spectacular views of Punakha Dzong and the Pho Chhu Valley.

Day 4
Punakha to Bumthang via Trongsa

Chimmi Lhakhang – A 20 minutes walk across terraced fields through the village of Sopsokha from the roadside to the small temple located on a hillock in the center of the valley below Metshina.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong – visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong under reconstruction after it got damage by fire.

Chendebji Chorten – also called Chorten Charo Kasho is a Nepalese style like stupa like Swayambhunath or Bodhnath built in the 19th century by a Tibetan Lama. It was built on the remains of an evil spirit that was tormenting the people of that region.

Day 5
Bumthang

Bumthang is one of the most spectacular valleys in Bhutan and also the heartland of Buddhism in Bhutan.

Jambay Lhakhang – Built by Tibetan King Sontsen Gampo to subdue the evil demon and spread the teaching of Buddha. Enjoy the mask dance performed by monks and locals.

Day 6
Bumthang

Kuejay Lhakhang – the monastery that has the body imprint of Guru Rinpoche and was built after the defeat of demon Shelging Karpo.

Jambay Lhakhang – Built by Tibetan King Sontsen Gampo to subdue the evil demon and spread the teaching of Buddha.

Day 7
Bumthang to Gangtay

The Valley of Phobjikha is well known as the winter home of the Black-necked crane.

Gangtey Gonpa – the old monastery that dates back to 17th century.

Day 8
Gangtey to Paro

Paro Dzong – also known as Rinpung Dzong built in the 15th century.

Ta Dzong – Built as watchtower now the national museum.

Drukgyal Dzong – Built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, father and unifier of medieval Bhutan. The Dzong was destroyed by an accidental fire.

Day 9
Paro

Taktsang Monastery (Tiger Nest): Your journey to Bhutan is incomplete if you miss the hiking to Taktsang Monastery. Located in the middle of the cliffy mountain, your pain will be washed as you reach the temple.

Kyichu Lhakhang – After lunch, we will visit the other oldest temple build along with Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang.

Day 10
Depart Paro
